Level Artist
We are Fatshark
We are a critically acclaimed Swedish game development studio with about 190 experienced and skilled employees. We are most well-known for developing the Warhammer: Vermintide franchise, but have also helped develop a number of AAA titles and we launched the highly anticipated game Warhammer 40,000: Darktide.
We have grown quite a bit over the last few years, but we still embrace the same values that we started with. We want to build the best first person co-op games together, in an approachable, fun and passion-driven way.
The role
Fatshark is seeking an experienced Level Artist to join our talented development team building an upcoming title in Unreal Engine 5.
A Level Artist at Fatshark serves as the bridge between design and art, shaping environments from early blockout to final, shippable quality with assets created by Environment Artists and layouts created by Level Designers.
You’ll collaborate closely with the Level Team, working side by side with Level Designers, Environment Artists, Lighting Artists, Technical Artists, Sound Designers, Concept Artists and the Art Director. Your work will be central to tying visual, gameplay and audio intentions together into a cohesive and atmospheric player experience.
You will be part of a highly motivated and talented team, so you will need to be driven, creative and flexible when meeting deadlines and handling unforeseen production challenges. At Fatshark, all members of the team take part in decision making. We are a small enough group to stay agile, yet big enough to realize ambitious ideas together.
As a Level Artist, your work will sit at the crossroads of art, design, gameplay and sound, so collaboration is key. You’ll rely on clear communication, the ability to give and receive feedback, and a willingness to iterate. Although your primary focus will be level art, there will be occasions where you support other areas such as prop setup, material adjustments or smaller polish tasks related to outsourcing or internal asset work.
This is a 12-month temporary position with a possibility of becoming permanent.
What you'll do
Collaborate with Level Designers to understand gameplay goals, layouts and flow
Build levels using modular kits, props and environment assets provided by the Environment Art team
Perform set dressing to create believable, visually compelling and gameplay-friendly spaces that help guide the player
Work with Lighting Artists, Sound Designers and Concept Artists to reinforce mood, readability and atmosphere
Ensure levels run smoothly on all target platforms by optimizing assets, lighting, occlusion and culling
Participate in playtesting and iterate on levels based on feedback from art, design, audio and QA
Provide clear feedback to Environment Artists and request new assets when needed
Help maintain level art guidelines and contribute to improvements in tools and workflows
Create materials and simple shaders together with Technical Artists to support visual quality and playability
Required qualifications
More than 2 years of professional experience creating level art or environment art for real time 3D games on console or PC
Experience working inside a game engine such as Unreal, Unity or a proprietary engine
A strong artistic eye with an understanding of composition, lighting, form, structure and visual storytelling
Ability to read and follow concept art, as well as improvise when needed
Understanding of level performance constraints and memory budgets
Experience with modular building, reusability and efficient scene construction
Strong communication skills and high proficiency in English
Ability to meet deadlines, handle multiple tasks and collaborate well with cross-discipline teams
Strong technical understanding of level optimization and a willingness to learn new tools and workflows
Ability to work independently and take initiative when solving problems
Bonus qualifications
Shipped at least one AA title
Experience developing cooperative games
Strong interest in fantasy worlds or atmospheric game settings
A background in gaming or a degree in art
