We are Fatshark

We are an independent Swedish game development studio located in Södermalm, Stockholm. With about 100 experienced and skilled employees we have worked as contractors for a number of AAA projects, as well as developed titles with publishers and independently for both consoles and PC. Our most recent game is the critically acclaimed title Warhammer: Vermintide 2. We tackle every project, genre and setting with enthusiasm, professionalism and a cup of coffee.

Role Description

Fatshark is looking to hire a lead backend developer that will support and develop the backend systems at Fatshark.

This position is a director level leadership role. As with all of our technical leadership, this position requires someone with the ability to grow a team. You will have a great impact on our organization, as you would be involved in recruiting and developing the people around you. With that said we also presume that you enjoy getting your “hands dirty” by doing parts of the coding yourself.

Your first task at Fatshark would be taking over the maintenance of our current backend, as well as the development of new features. As an example of that - a feature we want to have is for more of our game logic to be driven by our backend. As in, we would be able to dynamically push updates to our game, without having to repackage and ship updates over Steam, or certify updates for consoles.

New features like these would require planning, making sure game design, release management, and other stakeholders will be satisfied with your proposed solution. You would be in charge of detailing the backlog, designing the technical architecture, and implementing the foundation. However, when your team grows you will, as the team’s lead, work with project management to make sure the team delivers quality at a pace that’s healthy and sustainable.
Another important task will be communication with the teams working on the gameplay client, defining the correct interface and guiding in how to best utilize the backend functionality built.

  • Lead the team that maintain our live backend
  • Architect and develop future backend solutions
  • Help the rest of the organization understand the impact of technical and game design decisions, vis-à-vis the backend


  • 5+ years of professional programming experience
  • A solid understanding of Javascript, as that is what our backend is written in.
    You don’t need to know Angular or React, or any of the tools and libraries used by web programmers - our Javascript runs in a V8 Javascript Engine
  • Good understanding of Azure Functions, and C# as we’d like to transition our backend to using that
  • An inspiring leader who has the ability to help people grow
  • A team player - flexible and solution-oriented. Successful leadership at Fatshark relies on being communicative, supporting, and collaborative. Having an authoritarian attitude does not lead to happy, performant teams at Fatshark.
  • Good understanding of data and scalability.
  • Experience working with live products with large amount of end-users.
  • Excellent communication in English (Swedish is not a requirement)

Nice to Haves

These are some of the technologies we work with - we consider it a nice to have if you’ve experience with them.

  • Autodesk Stingray  - while chances are slim you’ve used this, it’s our own engine and we’re very proud of it.
  • Lua is the gameplay scripting language we use. Most communication with our backend is implemented through Lua.
  • Microsoft PlayFab is the backend solution provider we use.
  • Amazon Web Services and it's myriad of three-letter acronyms.
  • SaaS solutions for data analysis of big data like Tableau, Elastic Search, Kibana, Power BI, etc.
